A smiling Black woman with short, blond-tipped hair, wearing a yellow turtleneck and a blue and yellow patterned jacket, stands with her arms crossed.

Akinlana Burrowes, LMHC is a licensed mental health counselor, trauma therapist, and founder of Karibuni Counseling & Wellness, a trauma-informed private practice based in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving clients throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Florida through telehealth. Akinlana specializes in helping high-achieving women heal from trauma, anxiety, burnout, chronic stress, and life's major transitions using evidence-based and expressive approaches, including EMDR therapy. Her work is rooted in the belief that healing is not about becoming someone new, but rediscovering the woman who has been there all along beneath years of survival, responsibility, and self-sacrifice.

Before becoming a therapist, Akinlana spent seven years serving as a missionary throughout East Africa, where witnessing the lasting effects of generational trauma shaped her lifelong calling to emotional healing, restoration, and culturally responsive care. She is also the founder of Triumph Over Trauma Healing International, a nonprofit organization committed to expanding access to trauma-informed mental health education and healing resources for communities of African descent around the world.

Whether she is counseling clients, leading workshops, speaking to audiences, or providing EMDR Intensives, Akinlana's deepest desire is to see women experience the kind of healing that allows them to live fully, love freely, and walk confidently in the purpose God has for their lives. She is passionate about creating spaces where every woman feels seen, supported, and empowered to reclaim her voice, her peace, and herself.
