About Us

Our Story

Who We Are

Bethel AME Church is a faith-rooted, Black-led, multigenerational church in the heart of Boston. Founded by Rev. Drs. Ray and Gloria Hammond in 1988, Bethel exists at the intersection of worship, justice, and deep community.

We are a church where spiritual formation meets social action — where prayer fuels purpose, and faith is expressed through love, service, and liberation. Every gathering, ministry, and partnership is shaped by our belief that the Gospel must move beyond the pulpit and into the streets.

From powerful worship experiences to youth and family ministry, wellness initiatives to grassroots advocacy, Bethel is a place for those seeking both authentic community and transformational faith. Whether you're new to church, returning after a break, or just looking for a space to grow — you're welcome here.

🧭 Our Mission & Vision

Since our founding in 1988, Bethel AME Church has existed to love God, serve people, and make a real difference in Boston and beyond.

Rooted in faith and built on a legacy of healing, justice, and radical welcome, Bethel is a Spirit-led, Black-led, multigenerational church family committed to transforming lives and communities. We believe the true measure of faith is not just what we do for those within our walls — but how we show up for the most vulnerable among us.

Our vision is bold and urgent:
To be a church that meets people where they are, spiritually and practically, and walks with them toward purpose, growth, and liberation. Whether through worship, wellness, youth development, or community partnerships, we believe faith must be lived — with courage, compassion, and commitment.

This is more than a church.
It’s a movement. A legacy. And a place where your story matters.

Our Journey to St. Andrew

In 2007, Bethel AME Church moved into what is now our spiritual home on Wachusett Street. But the story of how we got here — the people, the prayers, and the purpose — began long before that. This mini-documentary captures our journey from vision to victory.

We invite you to experience it for yourself.

The History of the AME Church

The African Methodist Episcopal (AME)

The African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church was founded in 1816 as the first independent Black denomination in the United States. Its roots trace back to 1787, when a group of African Americans, led by Rev. Richard Allen, sought religious freedom and equality after facing racial discrimination in a Methodist church in Philadelphia.

Today, the AME Church continues its mission to spread the Gospel, promote social justice, and empower communities worldwide. With congregations spanning the globe, it remains a vital force for faith, equality, and community upliftment.
